Moon General Hospital

How it started

A short account of a hospital that began as one room in 2007.

Grow only as far as you can look after.

The founder

Shamsul Alam opened Moon Doctors Chamber in Shayestanagar in 2007 — one room, one purpose, at a time when few people in Habiganj were putting money into private healthcare. Clinics like it were still rare here; today, there's one on almost every block.

In 2011, the practice expanded into Moon Doctors Chamber & Diagnostic Center in Sabujbagh, adding laboratory and diagnostic services. By 2019, it had grown into Moon General Hospital in Shayestanagar — a full multispecialty hospital with fourteen departments, resident doctors, and weekly chambers from specialists based in Dhaka and Sylhet.

It is still run on the principle it started with: pay attention to the patient in front of you, and only grow as far as that attention can stretch.

What guides the hospital

Three things we hold to

Check before things get serious

Early diagnosis and regular check-ups matter as much as treatment after the fact.

Explain what's happening

Patients should understand their own care, not just receive it.

Build slowly, stay standing

We were one of the first private clinics in Habiganj, and we're still here.

How care works

Resident every day. Specialist every week.

Every day

Resident medical officers monitor admitted patients daily and respond as things change.

Every Friday

Consultant professors and senior physicians from Dhaka and Sylhet hold chambers here, mostly on Fridays.

One roof

Consultation, tests, surgery and admission all happen in the same building.

What to expect

A visit, start to finish

I.

Registration

Reception directs you to the right department.

II.

Consultation

See a resident physician, or a visiting consultant on their chamber day.

III.

Tests, if needed

Lab work and imaging happen on site.

IV.

Admission & surgery, if needed

Handled the same day when necessary — a mother arriving in labour, for example, is assessed immediately, and the on-call surgeon is brought in if surgery is required.

V.

Follow-up

Return visits are scheduled to track progress.

Good to know — Moon General Hospital handles consultation, diagnostics, admission and surgery. For major trauma or road-traffic accidents, Habiganj Sadar Hospital runs the district's emergency trauma unit.
